How do I give notice to move out?

You cannot give a 30-day notice to move out until after the initial lease term (usually one year). If you want to end the lease early the landlord must agree to sign a Mutual Agreement. You can pick up a Mutual Agreement form from OHA at 1619 or 1805 Harrison St. or you can call us to have it mailed to you.

Give your landlord proper written notice. You must give notice according to what your lease says, usually 30-days notice. You can pick up a 30-day notice form from OHA at 1805 or 1619 Harrison St or you can request that it be mailed to you by calling your Representative.

Get the landlord's signature or a Certified Mail receipt showing that your landlord received your notice.

Note: If you want to move out in less than 30 days the owner will have to agree to sign a Mutual Agreement.

Call your Representative to let him/her know that you are planning to move. If you don't know who your Representative is, call 587-2100 for a referral.

Note: If you want to move outside of Oakland, be sure to let your Representative know so they can get your Portability packet ready.

Give your Rep a copy of the notice you gave the owner (or the signed Mutual Agreement form). Remember, your notice must have the landlord's signature on it or you must get a Certified Mail receipt.

Give your Rep current income information for every household member. OHA will need information about all income and assets from every source for each household member.

Pick up your Transfer Voucher. Once we have received all your paperwork your Representative will prepare your Transfer Voucher and will call you when it's ready.

It usually takes 7-14 days for OHA to issue your Transfer Voucher.
